| Things That Are Fun |
... When you get home from a night at the bar already knowing that the Sox won and turning on the YES network to see the Yankees losing to the Angels 18-5 while the announcers talk about how if so-and-so gets on in the 8th and has men in base he has the potential to break some sort of RBI record.
I landed on YES too late to get the whole story, but it was still fun to hear. Cause after tonight it looks like we're going to be 6 games up and for some reason that feels a lot better than 5 games. Dunno why, but it does.
This post brought to you by the wonderful bartender at Botanica, who makes a very stiff drink indeed. There really should be a breathalyzer on computers so you're not allowed to drunk-blog, email, etc.Labels: baseball, Boston, drinking, Red Sox |

| Emotional Reset |
Someone (TomO I think it was you) said at Eddypolusa this year that the annual event is sort of an emotional reset for him. As soon as the words left his mouth I thought: Yes! YES! That's exactly it.
In years past that reset, that sense of calm has always stayed with me for months. Not so for 2007. Faced with a boss whom I've described at length before, I came back and was working weekends, was working on my days off, was driving myself insane. The anxiety I felt between the hours of 9 and 5 was following me home, constantly nipping at my heels.
I was headed for a breakdown and I knew it.
And then the weekend arrived. A weekend that promised the company of some of my guy friends, some baseball, and some beer. Saturday found us in the second row of dead center field at Camden Yards watching Beckett pitch a masterful game - the only one the Sox won in the series. Saturday night there was some Mexican food, many MANY beers, and a lot of entertaining conversation.
After a hangover-curing greasy brunch, there was a surprise sailing trip. 4 guy friends, a cooler full of beer, and my first trip on a sail boat (yes I am the worst Rhode Islander ever). As we floated past the monuments, swam in the placid waters of the Potomac, and talked about absolutely nothing for hours on end, I felt further away from work than I had since my days on the St. Croix.
But a 2am arrival time back in NYC and a morning that came far too fast brought Monday crashing down on my head. And then I did the smartest thing I've done in a long time.
I called out sick.
A lazy day of no work, sleep, some tv watching, and more sleep found me sitting in the office yesterday morning with a slight smile on my face as my boss called me insubordinate. For planning a happy hour. After hours. For a coworker who was leaving.
I'd officially figured out how to emotionally reset myself. And damn did it feel good.

| Yes, That Was Me You Saw Exiting The Gay Brothel |
My coworker and good friend had just gotten thrown under the bus. And then run over by it. Repeatedly. As she sat in my office with tears sparkling in her eyes I did what any good friend does in a situation like this:
I suggested we go for drinks.
So to Stillwater we traipsed. Located in the East Village, with a good happy hour and outdoor seating it was the perfect location for a nice summer night. Plus you get to play the "who's going to go in there" game.
The "Who's going to go in there" game was born when a waitress at the bar informed my girlfriends and I that the parade of men we had seen going in and out of the unmarked door to the bar's left were customers of a not-so-discreet male brothel. I think you can now guess the rules of the game. Pick a guy out as he walks down the street, make guesses on whether he's a customer or not.
Flash forward to a few hours after arriving at the bar. My coworker and I have more than a few beers in us, and since those beers were accompanied only by a hummus plate shared between three people, their effects are quite clearly being felt. The decision is made ... we were going in.
With my coworker leading the way we confidently opened the door not knowing what to expect. Part of me figured there'd be a bouncer right in side ready to throw out anything with a vagina. Instead we found a well lit stairway painted a bright, if a bit dingy, red and plastered with various movie posters.
At the bottom of the stairs we emerged into ... a movie theater lobby? Directly ahead of us was a ticket window and to it's right a black door. The man behind the window rose from his chair and as my coworker asked for directions to a place that didn't exist, I started observing certain things. Like the lack of movie times. Or the fact that the theater listings had things like "Theater 1:Comedy" "Theater 2:Film Noir".
And then I tune into the conversation happening directly in front of me:
Coworker: So what is this place, a movie theater? Man: Um, ah, no. Eets for zee gays.
So yes, that was me you saw exiting the gay brothel on east 4th street last night. But at least now you know why I was laughing so hard.Labels: drinking |

| A World I Just Can't Escape |
I've never thought of myself as an internet junkie. I mean, sure, I've got my blog. And my myspace page. A few mentions here and there on old job websites, Alzheimer's Association newsletters, etc. Oh and of course there's my account on my new favorite time waster: www.goodreads.com.
Then of course there's the three email addresses. The AIM screen name. The dozens of blogs I read and comment on. I pay my bills almost exclusively online. Hell, I even order my groceries over the internet!
Is there an Internet Addicts Anonymous somewhere out there? Because I think I need to become a member.
Then again, it's got its upsides. I mean, without the internet, it would have been impossible for the almost instantaneous sharing of photos from the reunion this weekend (one of which features me kissing a gay guy. I’m sure that one will make mom proud). And I never would have met some very good friends I've made through this site. I also probably wouldn't have ended up making a scene in the middle of one of my favorite Boston bars this weekend, but what would the fun in that be?
That's right, Finy's got a story about being drunk and making out. Who's shocked? Yeah that's what I thought.
I haven't thought up a moniker for him yet (which he's going to be VERY disappointed by), but Saturday night found a long-time online friend and fellow blogger and I kind of sheepishly admitting mutual internet crushes on each other. Not going to tell you which one, since he very rarely talks about his personal life on his blog, and far be it for me to out him. But with so many drinks that evening, said admission did lead to making out like horny high school kids in the middle of a very well-lit bar. I'm nothing if not classy.
So while some people may not understand the internet addiction, I think I'll just ride mine out for a while. As if I ever really thought of escaping it in the first place.Labels: blogging, Boston, college, dating, drinking |

| An Exercise in Pictoral Excuses |
Yes, I have been absent over the last few weeks, months, etc. But really, I've got some pretty good excuses.
First, I went to a Sox game at Yankee Stadium where I watched Dice-K pitch and the Sox win:
And ate a lot of peanuts:
After the game, I got way too wasted when the Twin showed up at Prof. Thom's after a 6 month absence. But he wasn't alone, he had the new-me with him. I held it together while at the bar, but the evening ended with me crying on the sidewalk in the Welshman's arms. Look for a post soon about the rules of post break-up behavior. I think The Twin needs a memo.
So the next day I was hoping the Sox would cheer me up when I attended the second game in the series. That didn't happen, since they lost, but at least I got to watch Wakefield pitch.
The third game in the series was watched at Thom's. Much beer was imbibed during the day. And into the night. 12 straight hours of drinking does not a good blogger make:
After a few days break in which I recovered from said weekend, I went to a very swanky and very successful Alzheimer's Association Junior Committee gala:
At which I was the PICTURE of decorum:
Two days later I was at a Cinco De Mayo party in Boston:
That didn't end until the sun was rising:
Long story short? I'm such an ass that I am not even going to promise that I'll be blogging more now (even though I will, no really, I swear).Labels: Alzheimer's, baseball, blogging, Boston, dating, drinking, misc., NYC, photos, Red Sox, sports, travel |

| A Brief Hiatus |
Well, in just a few hours I'll be heading, once again, back up to Boston. This isn't about a job interview (though they're all going well. And I actually have another one later this morning via phone for yet another nonprofit here in NYC). Nope, this trip is all about relaxing. And, well, most likely getting quite wasted.
This weekend, my friends, is the Winter Summit. 16 of us will converge on Boston from all over the country. We'll arrive by planes, trains, and automobiles from places like New York, Minnesota, Los Angeles, and Chicago. We'll eat too much, drink our livers into oblivion, and laugh until our sides hurt. We'll tell stories that no one gets but us, make scenes wherever we go, and basically make the city of Boston our bitch for five days.
God, I'm excited. Let the partying commence!Labels: Boston, drinking |

| It Really IS A Small World After All |
It's a small, small world.
The song has been running through my head lately (and now probably through at least a few of yours). It's easy to think that in a city of a couple million people it would be easy never to run into people, never to have that kind of random coincidence type of moment. But in the last week, I've had more than my fair share. Luckily, all of them were in a good way.
Thursday of last week, I went out to drinks with my Philly Fan Friend (Let's call her PFF for short) for drinks. While we were out playing darts we ran into a guy that works at the company that I had my first job out of college. In and of itself, not random, right? Thing is this guy is based out of Boston, is rarely in NYC and just happened to be staying at a hotel across the street. Add to that that he is about four rungs up on the corporate ladder than I was when I was there, and just happened to be handed the resignation of one of his team members just hours before seeing me, and you've got a very productive coincidence. He asked me to send him my resume, which he has since passed on for consideration. Small world episode number one.
The other two both happened on Saturday night. The Midwesterner, The Guy Magnet and I went out for a night on the town that night. Just out of the relationship with Barnard Boy, wearing my glasses, and not feeling all that up to trolling for men, I was going along as the wingwoman. I just needed to get out of my apartment.
A few hours into the evening we're leaving a bar and I run into an exroommate, her boyfriend, and their friend (hi guys!) who I hadn't seen in ages. I had never been to the bar we were at, and we were just leaving as they were coming in, but it was fantastic to see them and remind myself that I really should give them a ring to hang out soon. Small world occurrence number two.
Number 3 is really the most bizarre though. That same night, at our third bar of the evening, I am starting to get sick of this scoping men out thing. Since I wasn't in the mood to meet anyone for myself and the girls were pretty focused on it, I was getting a bit bored. So I separate from them for a few minutes and head out to have a cigarette where a guy asks me for a light. We start talking, and yes, ok, kind of flirting, and he and his friend join the girls and I for a drink inside. As this guy and I are talking I ask him where he's from.
Guy: Rhode Island. Finy: No way, me too. Where in RI? Guy: Barrington. Finy: *Stunned Silence*
He's from my hometown. No joke, we went to middle school together. We don't remember each other, but MUST have had some of the same classes because we had all the same teachers, and we're the same age/class (though he went to private high school while I continued on in the public school system). We know some of the same people, and our houses were probably a mile and a half apart. We spent the next THREE HOURS talking about home, who we knew, retelling stories from middle school, where we go when we go home now, etc. etc. etc. I left the bar that night and still couldn't believe it.
Moral of this story: "Though the oceans divide and the mountains are wide, it's a small world after all."Labels: dating, drinking, misc., NYC, Unemployment |

| How To Dance On A Bar |
1. Drink enough that you're wasted enough not to care that a whole bunch of people are watching you shake your stuff, but not so wasted that you could fall off the bar and break your head.
2. Even if you're not quite to that point yet, don't let one of your girls get up there on her own. Ever.
3. Be sure to have two guy friends accompanying you. Put a hand on each of their shoulders, prop your knee on the bar stool and climb onto the bar.
3. Do not wear high heels.
4. Try not to look at the pervy guy sitting right below you.
5. Smile for the tourists who are taking your picture, might as well look your best in their vacation photos.
6. Keep moving. Hips side to side, arms in the air, and occasional butt wiggle. You look like an idiot, embrace it. No one looks sexy dancing on a bar.
7. When the song is over, take a bow, let your two guy friends help you down from the bar, and accept all of the free drinks that will soon come your way.
8. Continue to get increasingly liquored up, while practicing your moves on the dance floor with a man in his late sixties, a leather vest, and a cowboy hat.
9. Keep drinking.
10. Repeat steps as necessary. Three times is ideal. Once while semi-sober. Once while good and drunk. The third time wasted enough that when your friend takes off her bra to donate to the collection on the wall, you just laugh your ass off instead of reminding her that that bra cost her $40.Labels: drinking, How-to |

| Am I Getting Old? |
The weekend, clearly, was insane. Lots to drink, little to no sleep, but I'd say we all handled it like the seasoned champs we all like to think we still are.
But then Monday getting up was ROUGH. And Monday night, even with the excitement that my friend from London, Zoe, was in town, the night ended relatively early. Tuesday included a trip to Williamsburg to see a friend's band play after which I refused one last beer and instead left before the others.
And then there's the most damning evidence. Last night I spent the entire night cleaning and doing laundry ... I was asleep by 10.
Is it happening? I am hitting that past 25 hump? Or am I simply having a rough week? Please god say it's just a tough week!Labels: drinking, misc. |

| What a Weekend |
Certain people fascinate me, and she was absolutely one of them. sitting on a folding chair smoking a cigarette, her frizzy grey curls forming a halo of hair around her head. She wore a mauve mock turtle neck, paired with the type of jeans you just know had an elastic waistband. And all around her were twenty-something women in varying states of undress; each of them teasing their hair, adjusting their break-your-ankle heels, painting on their makeup, or examining their exposed breasts.
This is the version of the strip club most never see. Here in the ladies room of the Manhattan genlemen's club called Private Eyes, I could barely contain my laughter. There I was, wasted, in my first strip club, continuing a conversation with one of the girls that had started while she was gyrating on a pole in front of me.
What can I say, I really liked the lingere she was wearing!
The entire scene had been perpetrated by The Redhead who had surprised us all the night before (Friday) by simply appearing - as if out of nowhere - from the left coast. See, while he had flown in just the previous day, his flight back to Los Angeles left at 6am Sunday morning. So clearly we had to stay up all night or risk him missing his plane. Clearly we all needed to take one for the team. And what better time for me to see my first strip club?
Previous to this, Barnard Boy, Midwestern Girl, the Redhead and I had packed the day with Brunch, a viewing of The Prestige, a walk in Central Park, a trip to Professor Thom's, and a pit stop at the Blarney something, a bar on 34th Street. Call us what you will (and drunks would be appropriate) but we know how to make the most of limited time together.
I laughed for the majority of the evening. At how my first thought upon entering the club was "Gee, I really like the boyshort and cami set the coat check girl has on" straight on through to our discussions while sitting on Perverts Row about whose boobs were fake, which were too coked out to know what they were doing, and if I had to choose, which girl I'd want a lap dance from.*
Somewhere towards the end of the night/morning, we split off into two conversations. The Redhead and Midwestern Girl discussing I don't know what, Barnard Boy and I talking yet again about the possibility of us trying to be more than friends. It was a topic I had grown accustomed to in the past week, and a thought I had had previous to that. But, as I am want to do, I had been over rationalizing myself out of it for weeks. Hadn't I just gotten out of a relationship? Did I really want to risk our friendship? Could he really open up to me the way I would need a partner to?
As we sat there, discussing our pasts and debating our future, all while absentmindedly stuffing dollar bills in half-naked women's G-strings, I decided I needed to stop thinking. He's cute, he's smart, he's funny, and I already trust him. Oh and he's a Red Sox fan.** What more could a girl ask for?
So yes, it is entirely possible that Barnard Boy and I "officially" crossed the friend line while sitting in a strip club. Now there's a story to tell your parents!
After all that, Sunday hit like a ton of bricks. Barnard Boy and I arrived at Riverside Park at 9:30am - just four hours after returning to his Harlem apartment. We proceeded to sleep-walk our way through the two mile Memory Walk before parting ways.
More than 24-hours later, I still don't think my body and mind have caught up with what went on this weekend. And neither has my wallet.
But hot damn if it wasn't worth it.
* I never did end up makign up my mind, so no, I did not get a lap dance. * How in the world I've ended up with yet another Sox fan while living in NYC I have no idea, but trust me, I am not questioning it! :) Labels: dating, drinking, NYC |

| Red Sox. Yankees. Beer. A Good Cause. Doesn't Get Much Better Than That! |
Well, as you can see under the "Organizations I Care About" Links, one of the causes I am tied to is the National Down Syndrome Society. And tomorrow, I get to combine that, with a Red Sox v. Yankees game and my favorite bar. Can't get much better than that now can it.
For those of you who don't know about the organization, NDSS is committed to being the national leader in supporting and enhancing the quality of life and realizing the potential of all people with Down syndrome through education, research, and advocacy initiatives.
So here's how you can help. Show up at the bar. Drink beer. Watch the Red Sox Game. Buy some raffle tickets. I know, I know, it's a tall order. Here are the details:
WHEN: Friday, August 18th. We are building the fundraiser around the 8:05 RED SOX v. YANKEES game, but I would get there early, Prof. Thom's always gets packed for these games. Oh wait, I haven’t told you where yet …
WHERE: Professor Thom's. Located on 2nd Avenue, between 13th and 14th Streets
WHY: Because you were going to watch the Sox game anyway. Because you were going to be drinking that night anyway. Because you want to win one of the many great raffle prizes we'll be having. Because you support individuals with Down syndrome (hmmm, maybe I should have put that first). Because you support ME damnit!
Anyway, it's sure to be a GREAT time, so I look forward to seeing some of you there.Labels: drinking, Red Sox, sports |

| What Do You Need to Accomplish to Consider Yourself a Success? |
Whenever a group of friends gathers every year, wether it be on a river, at a concert, or even just at a bar, certain traditions are bound to begin. For my high school friends, the tradition IS the trip. Every year we gather at a Dave Matthews Band concert in Boston. For the college friends that I just took a trip with, the traditions are many. Friday night is supposed to be the calmest of the parties (though it's never anything close to calm). The first person to pass out must get written on. Chipotle must be had for lunch on Sunday afternoon. These are just a few. Some of the others aren't so "Mom" friendly.
But by far my favorite tradition of Eddypolusa is Sunday night. for while there is a campfire every night we're on the St. Croix, Sunday night is the night that we all sit around together, lazily sipping our drinks, and ask eachother questions. Each person asks one, and everyone in the circle has to answer. The questions range from raunchy to thought provoking to all out odd, but laughs and tears almost always involved.
This year, a question was posed that stuck with me. "What would you need to accomplish to consider yourself a success?" My placement in the circle put me as the last person to have to answer the question, and almost immediately I began thinking of answers. I want to publish a book someday. I want to raise a family someday. The list goes on. But as I listened to all of my friends answers, all of them legitimate, I realized something. I'm already there.
It sounds cheesy and stupid, and I read somewhere that "happy blogging doesn't work" but I just don't care. See, I'm twenty-six years old. I've lived a life that a lot of people out there couldn't have dreamed of, even if I deem it relatively ordinary. I have the most amazing family in the world, friends that would stand by me through anything, I've loved, and I've lost, and I've loved some more. I don't need people to remember my name generations from now, I just need those that I love to know I love them (and let's be honest, I'm not exactly shy about telling people) and to know, in my heart, that I've lived as much as I could.
So now I pose the question to you, dear readers (if anyone is even still reading since I have been slacking lately with the posts - bare with me everyone, it's been a busy couple weeks): What do you need to accomplish to consider yourself a success?Labels: drinking, friends, self-improvement |

| I Made It ... Barely |
The view from the deck during the day
There's too much to post about, too many themes I want to write about. But for now, in my day-after-i-am-a-total-waste-of-space zone, a quick list. This weekend included: * A flight that was 5 hours late * A connector that never continued on to MN * A hotel room in Chicago * Swimming in the St. Croix river * More to drink than my liver could handle * Old Friends * New friends * Guys wearing womens underwear over their clothing * Girls wearing womens underwear over their clothing * Using a sharpie on the first guy to fall asleep * 12 kegs * Skinny-dipping * Campfires * Karaoke * Movies on the beach * More swimming * Jet skis * BBQ * Grilled sweet corn * and absolutely no interuptions from cell phones
I'm tired, hungover, emotionally drained and completely unproductive. But good lord was it worth it. Here's to Eddypolusa 2006. *Finy raises her glass of water* Because life's too short.

| Hastings Here I Come |
Hastings, MN that is. For a weekend of lounging on the St. Croix river, getting ridiculously drunk with all my friends from college, playing wiffleball, sitting by the campfire, and basically getting rowdy.
But first? I've got to get to the airport.
Does it make me a bad person that I am not thinking "Gee, it's a good thing they stopped those guys" and am instead thinking "Crap, why today? Seriously, one more day and I would have been fine."?
So wish me luck. Flight is at 7 tonight. Have a great weekend everyone. There will be many pictures and drunken stories to follow, I promise. Jason, THIS time, there will be debauchery to report. Promise.Labels: drinking |

| Let the Partying Commence! |
Drink, and dance and laugh and lie, Love the reeling midnight through, For tomorrow we shall die! (But, alas, we never do.) ~Dorothy Parker No, but we usually feel like we'd like to, and I am certain that come Sunday, I'll wish nothing less than death to cure the hangover I'll be feeling. Because starting this evening, the drinks will be flowing, and it's not going to stop until the wee hours of Sunday morning.
I don't know what it was about this year's birthday that I wasn't really getting excited about. As a matter of fact, I kept flat out forgetting it was approaching. I had decided early on that I'd just get a few friends together the night of, have a few drinks, and have that be that.
The Welshman convinced me otherwise. Our birthdays being only ten days apart, we decided to hold a joint party at our favorite bar, Professor Thom's, and suddenly what started as a small gathering of friends has ballooned into a guest list that is pushing 90. And just as suddenly, I find myself ridiculously excited about it. Not so much for the birthday celebration aspect of it, but the idea that all of my friends, everyone I care about in NYC, are going to be in one place at one time. That's just fun! I am a little worried about how my liver is going to hold up, considering the bartenders/owners of Prof. T's already have a penchant for plying The Welshman and I with beers and shots on normal nights ... God only knows what tonight is going to be like, but I am sure it won't disappoint.
And then, before the hangover can really set in on Saturday, the party continues at DTR's on Saturday with a birthday BBQ for her roommate. There are going to be friends from college there that I haven't seen in four plus years. Drinks will be had. Reminiscing will be done.
Why do I have the feeling that come my ACTUAL birthday on Thursday, I am still going to be feeling the after-effects of this weekend?Labels: dating, drinking, friends |

| One Sweet Show, Pt. II |
After leaving the Pour House, The Welshman and I headed over to Boston Billiards to meet my high school friends before going into the show. THIS is where the wheels fell off. A very quick beer and two shots later, we were headed into Fenway. I am still convinced that it was those two shots, which were my second and third within an hour and a half, were my downfall. And I think the picture of the Welshman speaks for itself:

But once inside Fenway, I was absolutely giddy. Though many of the male members of our group were not exactly excited to see Sheryl Crow perform, I really enjoy her music and she played a solid set (though I think we missed a few songs waiting in line to get onto Yawkey Way).

The break between Crow and DMB gave me a chance to look around the park, kind of take it all in. One of my favorite parts of the entire day was the Green Monster, which spelled out Dave Matthews Band (you can click on these pictures to make them bigger by the way):

The break also gave the Welshman enough time to start planning to jump over the barrier onto the infield just so he could roll around on it. The idea being that the one scrawny security guy on our side of the field probably wouldn't do much damage to him.

And then, it was time, Dave came out, and I lost all track of well, everything. They played a great set list, most notably, a fantastic cover of Sweet Caroline, which was just so venue appropriate I couldn't stand it. During that song, as I am prone to do, I called The Twin, said absolutely nothing, but held the phone up for him to listen to the song. After about 30 seconds he hung up. Which made total sense as I had called him before we got to Boston Billiards, warning of how that would most likely happen, and telling him to feel free to just hang up.
But I told him that when I was relatively sober. I have now been drinking for somewhere around 5 hours. So all throughout the show I am texting him. Telling him I'm so sorry I was calling and texting too much and that I promised I'd stop. But of course I didn't. Instead I KEPT texting about how sorry I was. And in my totally wasted state, I was upset. No good reason, just upset. Hell he even texted me back and told me it was fine. At the time, I totally didn't believe it.
That small issue aside, the show really was amazing. They opened with One Sweet World, one of my favorites, and closed with Two Step as an encore. And in all honesty, they could have played all their hits, and only their hits, and even though I HATE it when they do that, I still would have been happy as a pig in shit. I was at Dave Matthews at Fenway Park, it just doesn't get much better than that.

| One Sweet Show |
Well, I survived ... barely. It was quite the weekend in Boston, here's the illustrated story:
The Welshman and I arrived in Boston around noon, dropped our stuff off with a friend of his we were staying with, and headed out on the town. Our first stop? 21st Amendment on Beacon Hill.

And it was there that our first two beers were had while watching the beginning of the Sox game in Chicago. Perhaps it was a bad idea for me to start drinking at 1:30, knowing that I was going to continue on through the night. But at the time, that didn't really occur to me.
Soon after the bar we headed to Boston's famous North End. While I was in college I was OBSESSED with Bovas Bakery, which, no matter how hard you argue, I will always think makes better pastry than Mike's.

And let's just say I was really effing excited to be at my old college haunt:

So after that brief respite from the alcohol consumption, clearly we needed to get back to the bar.

So off we went to The Pour House, another college tradition of mine, where shots of SoCo and Lime and a few rather large beers were had. At this point, it's around 4:30, there's still a lot of night ahead of us ...
More to come later since Blogger is having a problem with photos at the moment ...Labels: Boston, drinking, friends, music, photos |

| Rule #76: No excuses. Play like a champion! * |

If by, "play like a champion" you mean drink like a fish, then yes, I would say that aptly describes the four days I spent down in Florida.
Hangover aside, the wedding was absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to get the pictures back from the professional photographer since they include a pictures of: 1. The bridal party running down the road past a line of traffic (most of whom were wedding guests) in an attempt to get to the beach before sunset for pictures. 2. Multiple photos of me peeling off my nylons when we reached said beach. 3. A picture of all of the bridesmaids tearing off Haynes T-shirts Hulk Hogan style since we all forgot to bring button down shirts so as not to mess up our hair or makeup after it was professionaly done. This of course on top of around 1000 other pictures. Should be good stuff.
I feel like I've been gone for a lot longer than I actually have. In the four days I was down there I attended a seemingly endless stream of events, sang more irish drinking songs than I care to remember, and had more to eat and drink than my body could be reasonably expected to hold. You'll all be excited to know that this was a wedding for two die-hard sox fans. I got to watch the Thursday night Sox v. Yanks game at the bar after they requested it be played, the bride's mother gave her a Build-a-Bear Bride Bear with a Sox jersey on it instead of the top of the dress, the bride's garter had a Sox logo on it, and at the reception the Dropkick Murphy's versions of Tessie and Dirty Water were blasted over the speakers. And happily, the only tears I shed were out of sheer joy for the bride and groom.
I was a bit scared that all these weddings coming up were going to push me even deeper into the bitterness that the Twin began a month ago. Happily, it had the exact opposite effect. I don't like being bitter, and to be honest, I do it very poorly. When it comes down to it, I am a positive, hopeless romantic at heart. One of my college friends calls it my "fluffy bunny". It was in full effect this weekend.
As I stood up at the altar, watching the bride and groom literally glow with happiness, I realized that no matter how much the breakup hurt me, no matter how much I pretended that I feel like I have given up on love, I could never really reach that point. It's stupid and sappy, but I still believe in it. I still believe that some day I am going to find it, and somehow that makes this easier to deal with. I mean, I deserve someone who loves me as much as I love them. Who one day I can look at like that. The Twin obviously wasn't that guy. And that's ok. I am not even remotely trying to say that I am looking to get married tomorrow, but it's nice to still believe that I will someday. Of course talk to me in ten years and if I'm still single, I may have changed my tune, but for now, I'm just going to roll with it.

| A Hangover, A New Job, and a Celebrity Sighting |
I awoke yesterday with, quite possibly, the worst hangover of my life. My head hurt, I threw up, and I generally felt like I was going to die. Wednesday had been my last day, as I had noted before, and after an interview for a sales representative job, I met up with 10 of my good friends at one of my favorite bars both to drown my sorrows and celebrate the end of what had turned into five weeks of torture.
I had intended the night to end with me returning to my apartment, drunk enough to have enjoyed the night, sober enough not to have become sloppy. A lot of beer and two shots later, I only vaguely remember leaving the bar, The Twin taking me back to his place, and generally taking care of me. So the hangover was to be expected I guess.
When I rose at 10:30 to use the bathroom, my head hurt so bad I couldn’t fall back asleep. So I checked my email. Along with a few “Hope you’re enjoying your first day of freedom” messages, was a note from a woman I had interviewed with a few weeks back. She asked me to call her whenever I got a chance. Hangover be damned, I got on the phone right away.
Long story short, I was unemployed for all of 18 hours. I can proudly say I am now the Publications Manager for a national non-profit. I am beyond ecstatic. The job has more responsibility, pays MUCH more, has better benefits, and I finally get to say goodbye to cube living since I’ll have my own office. Basically, it’s everything I’ve ever dreamed of, PLUS I’ll be working for a really great cause. I didn’t even need to think about it, I accepted the offer immediately. I then promptly called everyone I knew, told them about it, trekked back to my own apartment and went back to sleep. Getting a new job was exciting, but damn that hangover was still kicking my ass.
Later that evening, I met up with a group of friends from the company I had just been fired from. After choking down a few beers, we split ways and I headed towards Union Square to pick up a book at Barnes and Noble. Having just finished The Glass Castle, I had nothing to read on the subway ride home, and now that I was gainfully employed, I could afford to splurge on a new book.
As I’m standing outside Barnes and Noble, talking to Graduate School roommate about the new job and finishing off a cigarette, I see a Sox hat pass me on the street, and then stop a few feet away. The guy wearing it looks vaguely familiar, but I can’t quite place it. As I finish my cigarette and head inside I hear “Finy” behind me. I turn around, and it hits me. Sox hat guy? Yeah, it’s Jere ! Maybe not a celebrity to many of you, but to someone who reads his blog every day, he’s a celebrity in my little world. For those of you who don’t read his blog, you should. He knows more about baseball, pop culture, and well, really most anything, than I do.
So being the big dork that I am, I whip out my camera and have Chan take a picture of the two of us (see below). We chatted for a while, Jere led the way to his mother’s book , which I promptly bought. It was REALLY great to meet both Jere and Chan, and I hope Jere knows that now that I have met him in person I am going to require his presence at the bar at least ONCE to catch a game together this season.

So yeah, two days ago, my life was shit. Today, I have a great new job and I got to meet Jere. God damn, life is good.Labels: blogging, drinking, work |

| A Dead Giveaway |
Hair: Kind of fuzzy and pulled back into a haphazard ponytail.
Face: luckily made-up, but no amount of concealer can hide the circles under my eyes.
Outfit: Same as yesterday, with one new twist. Instead of the well-fitting, black sweater I was wearing, I am now in jeans and a men's white ribbed sweater that is obviously too big and smells like boy. A dead giveaway that I have not been home yet. I might as well be wearing a banner that says: I got drunk last night, and stayed at The Twin's place, yes I know it was a Tuesday but it was his birthday and isn't it a law that you have to get birthday booty?Labels: dating, drinking |
