Opening Day |
It is days like today that I wish I didn’t live in New York City. I love it here, don’t get me wrong, but one day every early April, I long to be back in Boston. Because today is opening day of the Red Sox season; a holiday of sorts. Today everyone’s batting average is .000, the entire pitching staff has a combined ERA of exactly zero, and no one has committed an error. It’s a clean slate.
The Sox start their season this afternoon fielding a team I know little about. Over the course of the coming months these men I have never known will work their way into my heart, by the fall they will feel like family. I will leave the deconstruction to the sports writers. I will shy away from predictions. Today isn’t about all that for me.
Today is about the simple things. The smells of the ballpark: the fresh cut grass, the tamped down dirt, the roasted peanuts, hot dogs, and beer. The sounds of the game: the thwack of the pitch hitting the catchers mitt, the first notes of the Star Spangled Banner ringing through the seats, the bat hitting the ball, and the absence of air as the crowd collectively holds it’s breath with every long fly ball.
Steroid rumors be damned. This is still a simple game. It’s eighteen guys, a small white ball, and a thin wooden bat. I don’t care how clichéd and over-done this sentiment is, because I honestly turn into a five year old on days like today. Which is why I miss Boston so much. Because it’s a city consumed by days like this. Today Bostonians will hang on every pitch, regardless of the fact that whether the Sox win or lose today means little. It’s still anyone’s season right now. It’s a clean slate. A new beginning. A insert-your-favorite-opening-day-cliché here.
This is going to be a great ride. Pass the peanuts, please.Labels: Boston, Red Sox, sports |

I can't wait. Just got EI for the season (but the bastards changed the pricing, it is all one lump sum now), and I'm ready for it to start already.
It also means my baseball posting on Redsoxnation.net will go up, as I find myself more comfortable talking, debating, and deconstructing actual games then I do with predictions, trades, etc.

Don't mean to be pedantic, but until you have one at bat, your BA can't be zero :-p

You're a freaking pain in my ass welshboy, you know exactly what I was going for.

The Home Opener is next week. It'll be a great day. Pedro opens at Shea on Thursday Night.

... and Arroyo, fresh after blanking the Sox in Spring Training (which I still maintain means I can feel okay about it), hits a home run in his first at-bat of the season.
Which is, ahem, one more than Wily Mo Pena has hit.
Yes, I'm still bitter.

yeah for the beginning of baseball season. Though it doesn't bode well for mt Twins taht they got beat by a minor leage team... like 10-4 even. heh. Still, yay for baseball!
Anyway, Slacker's Dating Odyssey has begun... check it out and feel free to take part in the challenge!!!

LOL...I can't believe Arroyo hit a home run last night for Cincy....
